How to use this calculator
Step 1 β Enter your monthly gross salary in kwacha (everything: basic + allowances + overtime). Step 2 β Enter your basic salary separately. This matters: NHIMA health insurance is 1% of basic salary only, while NAPSA and PAYE use the full gross. Mixing them up is the most common Zambian payroll error. Step 3 β Hit "Calculate Net Pay". NAPSA is capped at K1,861.80/month, so very high earners will see the pension line stop growing.

NAPSA: 5% of gross, capped at K1,861.80/month. NHIMA: 1% of basic salary (no ceiling). PAYE is computed on the full gross. Sources: Zambia Revenue Authority (zra.org.zm), NAPSA (napsa.co.zm), NHIMA (nhima.co.zm).
1. Computing NHIMA on gross salary. It's 1% of basic salary only β using gross overstates the deduction. 2. Missing the NAPSA cap. The 5% stops at K1,861.80/month (ceiling K37,236) β high earners don't keep paying 5% forever. 3. Thinking NAPSA reduces PAYE. PAYE is computed on the full gross; NAPSA and NHIMA come off separately.
Deductions explained: PAYE, NAPSA, NHIMA
Zambia runs three parallel deductions. PAYE is computed on your full gross in four bands (0% to K5,100; 20%, 30%, then 37% above K9,200) β deductions don't shrink it. NAPSA pension takes 5% of salary up to K1,861.80/month (the ceiling is K37,236 of salary); the employer matches it. NHIMA health insurance takes 1% β but of basic salary only, excluding allowances, which is the detail most people miss. All three leave your payslip independently; none reduces the base for the others.
What NAPSA and NHIMA actually buy you
The deductions aren't dead money. NAPSA is your state pension: contributions above the K1,861.80 monthly ceiling simply aren't collected, so high earners effectively get a lower pension rate. NHIMA (the 1% on basic salary) buys you access to covered healthcare at registered facilities across Zambia β if your payslip shows the line, you're entitled to the card. Both are mandatory; neither is optional, and neither reduces your PAYE.
