How to use this calculator
Step 1 β Enter your monthly gross salary in Tanzanian shillings β your total pay before any deductions, including regular allowances.
Step 2 β Hit "Calculate Net Pay". The calculator first deducts 10% NSSF pension, then applies the five PAYE bands to the remainder.
Tip: because NSSF comes off before tax, your effective tax rate is lower than the band rates suggest. If your employer's payroll software computes PAYE on the gross instead, your payslip is overstating your tax β this calculator shows the correct order.
How salary deductions work in Tanzania
| Monthly taxable income (TZS) | PAYE rate |
| 0 β 270,000 | 0% |
| 270,001 β 520,000 | 8% |
| 520,001 β 760,000 | 20% |
| 760,001 β 1,000,000 | 25% |
| Above 1,000,000 | 30% |
Order of operations: gross β 10% NSSF β PAYE on the remainder. There is no salary ceiling on NSSF. Sources: Tanzania Revenue Authority (tra.go.tz), NSSF (nssf.go.tz).
Worked examples
Example 1 β TSh 800,000/month: NSSF = 10% Γ 800,000 = TSh 80,000. Taxable = 720,000. PAYE = 20,000 + 20% Γ 200,000 = TSh 60,000. Take-home = 800,000 β 80,000 β 60,000 = TSh 660,000.
Example 2 β TSh 3,000,000/month: NSSF = TSh 300,000. Taxable = 2,700,000. PAYE = 128,000 + 30% Γ 1,700,000 = TSh 638,000. Take-home = 3,000,000 β 300,000 β 638,000 = TSh 2,062,000.
Common mistakes
1. Computing PAYE on gross salary. NSSF (10%) comes off first β PAYE applies to the remainder. Skipping this step overstates tax by thousands of shillings.
2. Thinking the employer's 10% NSSF is your deduction. Your employer contributes another 10% on top β it never leaves your payslip, but it's part of your total compensation.
3. Assuming SDL and WCF are salary deductions. The 3.5% Skills Development Levy and 0.5% Workers Compensation Fund are employer-only levies.
Deductions explained: NSSF vs PAYE
Tanzania takes two bites from your salary, in a specific order. First, NSSF: a flat 10% of your gross monthly wage goes to the National Social Security Fund β no ceiling, no bands. Your employer pays another 10% on top. Second, PAYE: income tax computed on what's left after NSSF, in five monthly bands (0% to TSh 270,000; 8%, 20%, 25%, then 30% above TSh 1,000,000). The order matters: because NSSF shrinks the taxable base, your effective PAYE rate is always lower than the band rate suggests. The 3.5% Skills Development Levy and 0.5% WCF are employer-only β they never appear on your payslip.
