How Income Tax Works in Zambia (2026)
Zambia's PAYE is computed on your full gross salary in 4 bands. Two more deductions come off separately: NAPSA pension (5%, capped) and NHIMA health insurance (1% of basic salary only).
The PAYE bands (monthly)
| Monthly income (ZMW) | Rate |
|---|---|
| 0 โ 5,100 | 0% |
| 5,100.01 โ 7,100 | 20% |
| 7,100.01 โ 9,200 | 30% |
| Above 9,200 | 37% |
Worked example
Monthly salary of K15,000 (basic K12,000): NAPSA = 5% ร 15,000 = K750. NHIMA = 1% ร 12,000 = K120. PAYE = 1,030 + 37% ร (15,000 โ 9,200) = K3,176. Take-home = 15,000 โ 750 โ 120 โ 3,176 = K10,954.

Another worked example
Monthly salary of K12,000 (basic K10,000): NAPSA = 5% ร 12,000 = K600. NHIMA = 1% ร 10,000 = K100. PAYE = 400 + 630 + 30% ร 2,800 = K1,870. Take-home = 12,000 โ 600 โ 100 โ 1,870 = K9,430.
Reading your Zambian payslip
Three independent lines: PAYE (on full gross โ deductions don't reduce it), NAPSA 5% (capped at K1,861.80/month), and NHIMA 1% โ but NHIMA is on your basic salary only, excluding allowances, so it should be smaller than 1% of your total pay. If NHIMA equals 1% of gross, your payroll is computing it wrong. Your NAPSA card number and NHIMA membership are both worth keeping โ they're your pension and healthcare access.
Common mistakes
1. NHIMA on gross salary. It's 1% of basic salary only.
2. Missing the NAPSA cap. 5% stops at K1,861.80/month (ceiling K37,236).
3. Thinking NAPSA reduces PAYE. PAYE is on the full gross โ all three deductions are independent.
What counts as taxable income in Zambia
ZRA taxes your gross emoluments: basic salary, allowances (housing, transport, education, utilities), bonuses, overtime, commissions, and gratuities. Benefits in kind are taxed at market value. The main exclusions: genuine reimbursements and employer pension/NHIMA contributions. Note the NHIMA quirk again โ allowances are taxable for PAYE but excluded from the NHIMA base, so the two lines on your payslip legitimately use different bases.
Tax year and filing in Zambia
Zambia's tax year is the calendar year, and these 2026 bands apply to the whole year. PAYE is withheld monthly and is generally final for pure salary earners โ no return required. If you have business or rental income too, you file an annual return with ZRA. Keep your P16 annual tax card from your employer; it's your proof of tax paid and NAPSA contributions for the year.
