How Income Tax Works in Tanzania (2026)
Tanzania taxes employment income through PAYE (Pay As You Earn), withheld monthly by your employer. The key thing to know: your 10% NSSF pension contribution comes off first, and PAYE is calculated on what remains.
The 2026 PAYE bands (monthly)
| Monthly taxable income (TZS) | Rate |
|---|---|
| 0 โ 270,000 | 0% |
| 270,001 โ 520,000 | 8% |
| 520,001 โ 760,000 | 20% |
| 760,001 โ 1,000,000 | 25% |
| Above 1,000,000 | 30% |
Worked example
Monthly salary of TSh 1,500,000: NSSF = 10% ร 1,500,000 = TSh 150,000. Taxable = 1,350,000. PAYE = 128,000 + 30% ร (1,350,000 โ 1,000,000) = TSh 233,000. Take-home = 1,500,000 โ 150,000 โ 233,000 = TSh 1,117,000.
NSSF โ the pension deduction
Employees pay 10% of gross monthly wage to the National Social Security Fund (employer adds another 10%). There is no salary ceiling. WCF (0.5%) and SDL (3.5%) are employer-only levies you never see on your payslip.

Another worked example
Monthly salary of TSh 2,000,000: NSSF = 10% ร 2,000,000 = TSh 200,000. Taxable = 1,800,000. PAYE = 128,000 + 30% ร 800,000 = TSh 368,000. Take-home = 2,000,000 โ 200,000 โ 368,000 = TSh 1,432,000.
Reading your Tanzanian payslip
Your payslip shows three key lines: gross salary, NSSF 10% (your pension), and PAYE (income tax). The employer's matching 10% NSSF, the 3.5% Skills Development Levy and 0.5% WCF are employer costs โ they should not appear as your deductions. If PAYE looks too high, check whether your payroll computed it on the gross instead of (gross โ NSSF) โ the most common Tanzanian payroll error.
Common mistakes
1. PAYE on gross instead of (gross โ NSSF). The order is fixed: pension first, tax second.
2. Thinking the employer's 10% NSSF is your deduction. It's on top โ your total compensation is 110% of salary.
3. Expecting SDL/WCF on your payslip. Employer-only levies; if they're deducted from you, something's wrong.
What counts as taxable income in Tanzania
TRA taxes more than your basic salary: regular allowances (housing, transport, hardship), overtime, bonuses, and benefits in kind (company car, free housing) are all taxable employment income โ benefits are valued at market rates. What isn't taxed: genuine reimbursements of business expenses, and employer pension contributions. If your "allowances" are really just salary by another name, TRA treats them as salary โ a common surprise for employees with allowance-heavy pay structures.
