How Salary Deductions Work in Kuwait (2026)
Kuwait levies no personal income tax โ but Kuwaiti nationals see real deductions, and everyone accrues an end-of-service indemnity with some of the trickiest rules in the Gulf (including a daily-wage divisor most calculators get wrong). Here's the complete picture.
PIFSS โ three deductions for Kuwaiti nationals
| Deduction | Rate & base |
|---|---|
| Pension | 8% of salary up to KD 2,750/mo |
| Supplementary | 2.5% of salary up to KD 1,500/mo |
| Unemployment (private sector) | 0.5% of salary up to KD 2,750/mo |
Expatriates pay 0% โ PIFSS covers Kuwaiti (and GCC) nationals only.
End-of-service indemnity โ the รท26 rule
Article 51 of Labor Law No. 6 of 2010: 15 days' pay per year for the first 5 years, then 30 days' pay per year โ capped at 18 months' wage. The daily wage is your monthly wage รท 26 (not 30). Resignation (Article 53) cuts it: nothing under 3 years, half for 3โ5 years, two-thirds for 5โ10 years, full at 10+.

Worked examples
Example 1 โ Kuwaiti national, KD 2,000/month, private sector: pension 8% ร 2,000 = KD 160; supplementary 2.5% ร 1,500 (cap) = KD 37.50; unemployment 0.5% ร 2,000 = KD 10. Total KD 207.50 โ take-home KD 1,792.50. No income tax.
Example 2 โ expat indemnity, 6 years, wage KD 800, terminated: daily = 800 รท 26 = KD 30.77; award = 30.77 ร (15 ร 5 + 30 ร 1) = 30.77 ร 105 = KD 3,230.77. Resigned at 6 years โ two-thirds = KD 2,153.85.
Basic vs. allowances โ why the split matters
Kuwaiti contracts commonly split pay into basic, housing and transport. PIFSS uses capped salary bands, so high earners stop paying more above the caps โ but the indemnity is computed on your last total wage including regularly paid allowances. As with Saudi Arabia, a bigger "basic" line in your contract means a bigger indemnity base.
Sending money home
The Kuwaiti dinar is the world's highest-valued currency unit โ small rate moves matter. Compare total received across providers before transferring, and check the live mid-market rate on our salary currency converter.
Common mistakes
1. Dividing by 30 instead of 26. Kuwait's daily wage is monthly รท 26 โ using 30 understates your indemnity by ~13%.
2. Resigning at 2 years 11 months. Under 3 years of resignation = zero indemnity; one more month unlocks half.
3. Forgetting the 18-month cap. Very long service doesn't accrue forever โ the cap binds around 20+ years.
