How Income Tax Works in Indonesia (2026)
Indonesia taxes salaries as PPh 21 under the UU HPP law. Three things shrink your taxable income before the brackets apply: BPJS contributions, the biaya jabatan position-expense deduction (5% of gross, max Rp 500K/month), and your PTKP non-taxable allowance.
The PPh 21 brackets (annual)
| Annual taxable income (IDR) | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to 60,000,000 | 5% |
| 60,000,001 โ 250,000,000 | 15% |
| 250,000,001 โ 500,000,000 | 25% |
| 500,000,001 โ 5,000,000,000 | 30% |
| Above 5,000,000,000 | 35% |
PTKP allowances (per year)
Single: Rp 54M ยท Married: +Rp 4.5M ยท Each dependant (max 3): +Rp 4.5M.
Worked example
Monthly salary of Rp 15,000,000 (single): BPJS โ Rp 530,863/mo โ Rp 6.37M/yr. Biaya jabatan Rp 6M. Taxable = 180M โ 6.37M โ 6M โ 54M = Rp 113.63M. PPh 21 = 3M + 15% ร 53.63M โ Rp 11.04M/year (โRp 920K/month).
BPJS โ the 4% employee total
1% health (capped Rp 12M/mo) + 2% old-age savings (JHT) + 1% pension (JP). Unemployment insurance (JKP) is fully government-funded โ 0% from you.

Another worked example
Monthly salary of Rp 20,000,000 (single): BPJS = 200,000 + 400,000 + 200,000 = Rp 800,000/mo (Rp 9.6M/yr). Biaya jabatan = Rp 6M (capped). PTKP = Rp 54M. PKP = 240 โ 9.6 โ 6 โ 54 = Rp 170.4M. Tax = 5% ร 60M + 15% ร 110.4M = Rp 19.56M/year (Rp 1.63M/mo). Take-home = 20,000,000 โ 800,000 โ 1,630,000 = Rp 17,570,000/month.
Reading your Indonesian payslip
Your slip gaji shows BPJS Kesehatan 1%, JHT 2%, JP 1% โ check the JP line: it must stop at Rp 110,863/month (1% of Rp 11,086,300); if it scales with your full salary, the cap is missing. Biaya jabatan (5%, max Rp 6M/year) is a tax-computation line, not a cash deduction. PPh 21 is your income tax โ verify your PTKP status (TK/0 vs K/2 etc.) matches reality; the Rp 13.5M difference between single and married-with-2 is the most expensive checkbox on the form.
Common mistakes
1. JP pension without the cap. 1% stops at Rp 110,863/month.
2. Wrong PTKP status. Single vs married-with-2 differs by Rp 13.5M of tax-free income.
3. Forgetting biaya jabatan. The automatic 5% (max Rp 6M) position-cost deduction always applies.
What counts as taxable income in Indonesia
Indonesia taxes salary, allowances, bonuses (THR included โ fully taxable), overtime, and natura/kenikmatan (benefits in kind, taxable since 2022 at market value, with limited exemptions). The BPJS deductions, biaya jabatan, and PTKP come off this total. Exempt: genuine reimbursements and employer BPJS contributions. THR (the religious-holiday bonus, typically one month's salary) surprises employees yearly โ it's 100% taxable income.
