How Salary Deductions Work in Ghana (2026 Guide) (2026)
Ghana rewrote its PAYE bands mid-year — and its pension works differently from almost every other country in this batch (basic salary, not gross). Here’s the 2026 system.
Act 1178 — the September 2026 bands
The Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2026 (assented 26 August 2026) changed PAYE bands from 1 September 2026 — January to August used the old bands. Monthly resident bands:
| Monthly chargeable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| First GH₵588 | 0% |
| Next GH₵80 | 5% |
| Next GH₵100 | 10% |
| Next GH₵2,900 | 17.5% |
| Next GH₵16,000 | 25% |
| Next GH₵30,332 | 30% |
| Above GH₵50,000 | 35% |
The tax-free band rose 20% (GH₵490 → GH₵588/month — GH₵7,056/year), deliberately set so minimum-wage earners (GH₵21.77/day) pay no PAYE. Every resident gains at least GH₵117.60/year. Non-residents: flat 25%.
SSNIT — 5.5% of basic, and the Tier 1/2 routing
Employee 5.5% of basic salary (deducted from pay, reduces chargeable income); employer 13% of basic. Ceiling: GH₵69,000/month maximum insurable earnings (2026). The employer remits the full 18.5% to SSNIT: 13.5% stays with SSNIT (Tier 1 defined-benefit pension) and 5% goes to your licensed Tier 2 trustee (mandatory occupational lump-sum). There is no separate 5% employer surcharge — “employer 18%” is the classic error. Tier 3 (voluntary provident, to 16.5% of basic) is tax-deductible but not modelled.
Personal reliefs
Annual, reducing chargeable income: marriage/responsibility GH₵1,200; old age (60+) GH₵1,500; child education GH₵600/child (max 3); aged dependants GH₵1,000 each (max 2); disability 25% of income.
What’s NOT on your payslip
NHIL 2.5% + GETFund 2.5% are levies on goods and services (VAT-adjacent) — never deducted from salaries. The COVID-19 levy was repealed in January 2026.
Worked examples
Example 1 — basic GH₵5,000 (all basic): SSNIT GH₵275 → chargeable 4,725 → PAYE GH₵785.75 → net GH₵3,939.25/month.
Example 2 — gross GH₵8,000 (basic 5,000 + allowances 3,000): SSNIT on basic only → net GH₵6,189.25/month.
Common mistakes
1. January bands on a December payslip. Act 1178 has applied since 1 September — make sure payroll switched.
2. Allowances in the SSNIT base. Unless declared pensionable, allowances stay out — this is where Ghana differs from Kenya, Nigeria and most others.
3. The 23.28 minimum-wage figure. One July-2026 article claimed GH₵23.28/day — four corroborating sources say GH₵21.77; treat 23.28 as erroneous.

Ghana salary FAQs
When did Act 1178 take effect?
Assented 26 August 2026; the new PAYE bands apply from 1 September 2026 (January–August used the old bands).
How does SSNIT Tier 2 work?
5% of the 18.5% total goes to your licensed Tier 2 private trustee for a lump sum at retirement; 13.5% stays with SSNIT as the Tier 1 defined-benefit pension.
Can I get my SSNIT back if I leave Ghana?
Non-Ghanaian nationals permanently departing were historically entitled to a lump-sum return, but administrative rules have evolved — verify current status with SSNIT directly.
Are bonuses taxed differently?
The first 15% of annual basic salary paid as bonus is taxed at a flat 5%; the excess follows the progressive bands.
